This unit is much more than a simple CD player (CDP).It is in fact a separate CD transport plus a multifunction DAC -- all on one chassis! As you can see from the photo of the rear panel, there are two selectable digital inputs and outputs (optical and coax) for external digital sources. In addition, there is a pair of balanced outputs plus two pair of single ended outputs. So using the unit's digital volume control, you can go directly to an amplifier and subwoofer if you like, without the need for a preamp. You could of course control other digital sources the same way (such as a Blu-Ray player or a music server.) There is also provision for four custom input cards (such as a MM/MC phonoamp!) which would allow this unit to be the center of a complete audio system! So this is way more than a basic CD player!
