I have a McIntosh MC225 for sale As-Is at $1,000, which means it runs but one Output Transformer has failed and needs to be fixed. Unit is in pretty good condition, considered one of the better vintage tube amps ever built, includes GE power tubes and all other tubes. Mike Samara has determined that one Output Transformer has failed, which can readily be fixed by having it re-wound by the highly regarded Mr. Hoyer or replacing it with another if one can be found. Price is $1,800 if I have Mike install a re-wound transformer before shipping. Obviously $1,000 plus $650 does not equal $1,800. I have to pay Mike for his service plus shipping the unit to Mr. Hoyer. Below is message from Mr. Hoyer on rewinding the Transformer. "I have ALL of the "ORIGINAL WINDING DATA" from McIntosh Laboratory for rewinding ANY of their MANY output coils, including the McIntosh MC-225 transformer. The way I rewind their transformers is exactly the SAME and the same sized magnet wires which, by the way, is a special order product that I have to buy on 80 pound SPOOLS. THERE WOULD BE NO-DIFFERENCE IN THE "SOUND" OF THE AMPLIFIERS. Regular insulated WIRE insulation is not used in the bifilar or tri-filar primaries as it cannot WITHSTAND the high voltage between turns. This would CAUSE an early breakdown.
The price including shipping back to you is $650.00. Payment must be made to DENNIS R. HOYER in the form of a bank cashier's check or a U. S. Postal Money Order. Personal checks require at least a two week waiting period before I can start work on your transformer. Dennis Hoyer
