I'm going to sell this quad of original (British/GEC) Gold Lion KT-88's which I've given very little use. As you can see, the transconductance values are near new -- which are/were 10,000 to 12,000 micromhos for original Gold Lions. Today's KT-88's barely get over 5000 micromhos when brand new, and a few get up to 7500 -- that includes the (NOWHERE-NEAR-IDENTICAL!) Russian "Gold Lion" knock-offs from New Sensor There are actually 2 exceptions, one of them being the EAT's, which currently sell for around $1600 for a quad, I think, and which get around 11,000 micromhos.

The transconductance issue is important because in order to get the sparkling low-level micro-detail for which the original GEC tubes were so famous, requires a Gm (transconductance) value over 9000 micromhos. Even the very high Gm value tubes, like these originals, the EAT's and the latest black-coated Shuguangs, will lose some of that sparkle when they get old and fall below 9000 micromhos!

How do I know this? Well, because I used this set of tubes in my McIntosh MC275 amplifier as a reference for other KT-88 tubes I wanted to try. The EAT's make the grade, but are too expensive for me. Only the newest Shuguang black-coated KT-88's (second-generation Black Treasures) come close -- and you can just forget all the hype about everything else because nothing else out there, regardless of price or quality, passes the 9000 micromho test!

Anyway, this set is in perfect condition (except for the "vintage" labels ;~)) and has been recently tested on my Hickok 6000A tester. There are two very closely matched pairs, while all four are very well matched (although it's matched pairs that are important in power amplifiers.)

They will be carefully packed in the Psvane foam-lined presentation case shown in the pictures, and shipped fully insured via FedEx Express Saver (3-day). Buyer pays for packing/shipping+insurance. Payment can be through PayPal (add 3% + 39 cents ;~) or by cleared personal check, cashier's check, or money order. If you must make an offer, go ahead; however I think the price is very fair, considering nobody in their right mind would let a set like this go -- it's just I'm getting old and it's time to get rid of stuff before it get's rid of me!
