These amplifiers are very highly regarded, and rave reviews can be found online. Built with vintage Chicago transformers, the sound is lush, with great detail and pace. Transparency, sense of space and air are excellent. There is a lit from within quality on a par with, but just a hair less than the best SET amps that I have heard. What you get in return though, is more body and a much heightened sense of dynamics compared to a single ended triode circuit. Brass instruments have a warm, burnished quality that is just stunning.These are actually two monoblocks built onto one chassis, and two separate power cords are used. As is often the case with these amplifiers, the brass top plate has tarnished, although the woodwork is quite nice in appearance. I have not tried to restore the luster of the metallic plate, but I suspect that this could be easily addressed. The amplifier comes with a new quartet of great sounding Sophia Electric 45 tubes, as well as two pair of strong Sylvania 6SN7 GTB tubes. The amplifier can also use 2A3 tubes by simply readjusting the bias setting (a very quick and easy process). I was told by the dealer from whom I purchased the amp, that it was gone through and re-capped by Backert labs. I am not certain about the age of the unit. It is functioning perfectly for me. I've generally used the amp with high efficiency Lowther and Phy-HP wideband drivers, although it also sounded excellent when paired with 84db sensitivity Rogers monitors that I owned. I've used it to great effect with both active and passive preamps, as well. In answer to questions that I've been receiving, there is a small amount of hum through the transformers but not the speakers,in my very transparent and quite resolving system. This amp is highly revealing of inner detail and ambient cues. I am a classical guitarist, and appreciate the degree to which this amplifier allows the listener to follow individual melody lines and chordal notes within the mix. Very special. As good as it is, after many years of "chasing the dragon," I am looking to simplify and declutter my system and collection of equipment. To this end, I also have a quad of EML 2A3 Mesh plate tubes that I will offer to the buyer for an additional $300.00. The tubes have low hours, and alone would go for almost $1,400 new.If the amp sells without these tubes, I will then sell them separately, but not at this price.
