I have been rebuilding and making tube amps for over 25 years, so you can buy with confidence. This is a perfect amp for small room like a bedroom or den. Price is very low for a brand new fully tested tube amplifier. Do a search, other than made in China amps of dubious distinction, the price is reasonable and I am available for modifications and repairs if necessary. Try to get any support from buying an amp from China. Full vetted chi-fi are priced way higher than this one.
The amp is an EICO HF86 clone. The HF86 is a push pull el84 stereo amp with a 12dw7 driver/splitter tube and tube rectification. For this build i used the chassis and power and output transformers from a console amp that i bought awhile back. It may have been a Zenith or Admiral unit but that is just a guess. I completely gutted the old parts and kept the transformers, the chassis , and some of the tube sockets which were in good shape. I installed a new rectifier tube socket and a new socket for the 12ax7 input tube. I followed the HF86 schematic faithfully except that instead of using a 12dw7 tube i use a 12ax7 and 2 12au7. The 12dw7 is actually 1/2 of an ax7 and 1/2 of an au7 in 1 tube. Also instead of 2 6ca4 rectifiers this amp uses a 5v4ga or 5ar4 rectifier. All components, resistors, capacitors (featuring "Orange Drop" signal caps and film caps in critical areas of the power supply), wiring, input and output jacks, hardware, etc is brand new. I also painted the chassis and the transformers, to improve the appearance.
Sound quality from this amp is very, very, good, surprisingly good for such a little amp. This is partially due to the unusual power supply which consists is CLCLC, or capacitor to choke to capacitor to choke to capacitor. First cap is a Solen film of 20uf x 2H choke x 33uf Cornell Dubellier x 1H choke x 68uf CD cap. I like to use chokes in the power supply because they help to regulate the current which improves sound quality. I should mention that output power is about 14 watts / channel.
This amp has been out fitted with all new input and output jacks, new AC grounded power cord, on/off switch and fuse. The resistors are metal film and coupling caps are audiophile "orange drops".
In this iteration, the all important power supply, CLCLC (capacitor, inductor, capacitor, inductor, capacitor) uses fresh Cornell Dubellier which were made in USA. The power tubes are operating in push pull class A/B with cathode bias. The cathode bias is chosen for excellent sound and solid reliability. You want an amp that is dependable with excellent sound. This amp is designed to give you years of service, with the ability to allow you to try different tubes for the best audio experience.
