I am selling a unique and beautiful sounding 45 single ended triode stereo amp, made by John Hogan. This was an amp John called “the green monster”. It is a typical John Hogan amp, funky looking and great sounding. The amp has built in volume controls, one for each channel, so it can be used directly with a CD player, without having to use a preamp. It is tube rectified with a 5U4G and uses a single 6SN7 tube for input, 76 tubes as drivers, and 45 tubes for output. It uses AC filament heating, has dual hum pots and has an IEC power cord input, so you can try different cords if you want. This amp uses vintage Webster and Sansui transformers. John Hogan’s genius was using vintage transformers with modern SET circuit design and new internal parts to hand build amps with a rich, robust sound. His secret was finishing each amp by ear, listening carefully, making a tweak and listening some more. The final product was an industrial funky looking amp that was very reliable and wonderful sounding, with a rich, vibrant midrange. There are lots of discussions about John Hogan’s amps on the SET forum of Audio Asylum, including some by John himself before he passed away in 2006. John only made about 150 amps. They are rare and come up very seldom for sale because of owner loyalty. I had John build me several amps over the years and now this 45 amp is ready for a new owner. The tubes in the photos are included in this sale. The tubes include Tungsol 5U4GB, Sylvania VT-231, 6SN7GT, Pair Tungsol 76’s, and Pair Cunningham Radiotron 45’s. They will have to be shipped separately from the amp. Supply your own power cord.

I have a large variety of other tubes that could be sold separately. If you want to purchase what I consider to be the best possible tubes for this amp, they would include – Tungsol 5U4G top getter ($75), Tungsol round plate 6SN7 ($100), Visseaux Radio 76’s ($100) and a pair of Emission Labs solid plate 45’s ($385). At this time I am only planning on selling these as part of the sale of the amp.

The amp weights 20 lbs. without tubes and measures 16” x 9” X 9”. The amp will be properly packed and the shipping weight will be about 30 lbs. I would be happy to answer any question regarding this amp. If you value the sound quality rather than the appearance of your amp, don’t miss this rare opportunity.
