So... I think the really interesting part here is most guys seem to get latched on to the Threshold connection at the design level, where what's maybe even more relevant to the Model 40 being a big overachiever is what they were able to accomplish in terms of bill-of-materials and build quality for the price, by leveraging Threshold's scale and specialized supplier base. Perhaps not coincidentally, the Model 40 bucks high end convention and opts for a very compact, tightly integrated design with an external power supply. At a similar price, I had an Aragon Aurum here for a long time to compare. Where the Aurum was visually this massive chassis that literally takes up the whole shelf, the Model 40 unequivocally SOUNDS bigger and more vivid..., to the point where it's almost funny to sit and try to reconcile what you see with what you hear. It's hard to imagine someone listening to this and being anything less than totally delighted for the price. A lot of these have lived... how shall we say... hard lives. This Model 40 is in gorgeous shape though, including recapping the electrolytics in the power supply for another lifetime of trouble free service. There is one tiny dink on the bottom right corner of the front panel and a couple ultra light scuffs on the top, nowhere even close to being through the powder coat into the metal underneath. Otherwise, flawless operating and cosmetic condition. Includes original factory box & packing, a copy of the owner's manual, and the IEC power cord. For the listener who values the things it does really well, the Model 40 is a brilliant linestage that can be the heart of an immensely rewarding system. One of the most cost effective designs to manage totally sidestepping any solid state grit or glare, without rounding everything off to the point of becoming bland and boring in the process. Pair it with something like a Lounge LCR and you could have a full function pre for well under $1000 that just makes super engaging music. Asking $590 + shipping/PayPal (if applicable.
