FOR SALE: Very rare Eidolon Research Salesia tube preamplifier. Made in the USA in Ann Arbor, Michigan by a boutique electronics company that was ahead of its time and was a competitor to Conrad Johnson and Audio Research. The Salesia has two phono stages, two line stages and two tape loops. The phono stages can be custom load adjusted. The "Level" pots serve as channel balance adjustors (a very helpful feature, imho). The Salesia has a soft start feature which warms up the tubes before applying B+ to them. Comes with six tubes (described below) that are included as a free bonus.

Here is some of the little information available on this preamp:

... from Audio magazine's October 1990 33rd Annual Equipment Directory: Tube type preamp with 0.5 hz-150 khz frequency response, +0, -0.1.5 db; 70 volt maximum output; 0.01% total harmonic distortion; no balanced inputs; selectable high-level sensitivity; 2 tape & processor loops; 0 tone controls; ability to invert polarity. Phono section has active & passive R.I.A.A. Moving magnet phono stage has 1.45 mv sensitivity for 0.5 volt output @ 1 khz; moving magnet phono overload is 500 mv; moving magnet input pf capacitance is adjustable. Moving coil phono signal to noise ratio is -78 db, "A" Wtd, re. 0.5 mv. $1249 retail.

"A cool thing about the phono stages is that they can be customized to match the required impedance of a particular cartridge.  There are two jacks on the back that you basically install your own resistor on - 47k or whatever you want." Both MM to MC cartridges may be used (there is a "high/low" selector toggle on the front panel).

This is a craft-built preamp and should be customizable and upgradeable

here is some of the discussion:

“It appears to be very similar to the early Bruce Moore designs I've owned in the past. I'd say better than the AI-2 series as well as the Magus I've owned.”

“It's an American Made Preamp from Ann Arbor Michigan from the 80s. Uses 6 - AX7s, has a boatload of PS capacitance w/SS regulation, also 2 Phonos, 2 sets of main outs and 2 Tape Loops."

“The two controls marked level 1 and 2 are the level controls for the individual channels. The two jacks on the back marked load 1 and 2 are there to load the phono inputs. There would normally be and rca jack with a 47k resistor soldered from pin to shell to load the phono cartridge. The switch marked High and Low sets the gain of the unit high or low for varying phono cartridge outputs.”

TUBES: shipping with four Baldwin-branded Sylvania "17mm long grey plate, low noise" 12AX7 tubes and two GE 5814-WA tubes (12AU7 types). The Salesia came to me with 12AU7s in that position so that is how its being sold. All of the tubes were sold to me as testing very high, basically NOS, and have barely been used, but they are included at no charge and no test results are guaranteed .

CONDITION: rating at 6/10. Being sold "as is." Works and sounds good, but is decades old. A couple of the phono jacks are loose. Sounds like a slightly loose connection(s) somewhere, or an intermittent component (or tube). i'd recommend having a tech go thru the unit. Exterior looks nice from a distance, but has light marks and nicks. See photos. The original set of screws for the top panel are lost, and it will come minimally screwed down.

PRICING: price reflects rarity, age and condition. open to reasonable offers. if you put a few hundred dollars into this unit, it will still be a heck of a deal.

SHIPPING: dependent on location, but should be around $25/30. will be well packed to survive the journey. free pick up in chicago available.
