Here are two complimentary albums that focus on the Civil War. The albums are entitled "The Union" and "The Confederacy." Each cloth-covered album measures 12.5" by 14", has an embossed cover, and comprises a book and a 12" LP.The records permit one to listen to songs treasured by the Union and Confederate armies.

From one look at the albums it is obvious that Goddard Lieberson, head of Columbia Records, intended the works to be first class. The Union has 60 pages and The Confederacy has 32 pages. There are unnumbered, blank, vellum tissue, spacer pages in the books. Each book contains numerous photos in addition to text by authors Bruce Catton and Clifford Dowdey. Esteemed Civil War historian Bruce Catton authored at least ten non-fiction books on the Civil War. He won a 1953 Pulitzer Prize for "A Stillness at Appomattox," and the Presidential Freedom Medal in 1955. Clifford Dowdey is one of the outstanding Confederate writers and his "Experiment in Rebellion" is one of the best source books on the history of the Confederate government.

I am the original owner of the albums. The records are in near mint condition and they are protected by a second, after-market, sleeve (paper with vinyl liner). The covers/pages are very good. There is a small triangular patch of blue color at the upper, left corner of The Confederacy cover (see photo). It came that way from the factory. The blank vellum page preceding the record in The Union has some wrinkles.

The records feature the National Gallery Orchestra conducted by Richard Bales, and the Cantata Choir, Lutheran Church of the Reformation. Some of the songs in the Union record are: Tenting on the Old Camp Ground, Aura Lee, The Battle Cry of Freedom, The Vacant Chair, and Just Before Battle, Mother. The record also includes The Gettysburg Address narrated by Raymond Massey (the movie star known for his outstanding portrayal of Abraham Lincoln). Some of the tunes on the Confederacy record include: The Bonnie Blue Flag, All Quiet Along the Potomac Tonight, The Yellow Rose of Texas, Somebody's Darling, and Dixie's Land with Quick Step.
