Pair JBL Project Everest DD55000 Horn Speakers - original owner, over $4K in upgradesI am listing these legendary speakers on behalf of the original owner. The DD55000 speakers were the last model to be hand-assembled by the original JBL cabinet craftsmen in Northridge, California. This is the same location where JBL Hartsfields, Paragons, L-200s and L-300s were made. Most of the production was sold to Japan and none were officially available in the US. The owner originally purchased them in 1985 when he lived in France (his home country). The speakers currently reside in Brooklyn, NY. After twenty years of ownership, the owner has decided to sell them and move to a much more expensive speaker that has caught his interest. While a stock pair of these is rare in the U.S., this pair has also had $4,000 worth of upgrades done by THE horn speaker guru in France, William Walther. Mr. Walther was the owner of the highly regarded audio salon, “La maison de l’audiophile” in Paris. (Unfortunately, William’s audio salon closed in 2010.) Very few people have gone to the extent of upgrading these speakers to reach the level where they are now. The list of upgrades completed are: 1) Audio Note AN ZV (top of the line) internal wiring
2) Audio Note copper/oil caps and Onken “self” inductor coils. All cap and coil upgrades were done with the same values as the originals. The Onken coils were made in Japan and are incredibly good and rare now.
3) The horn was damped with a plasticine coating to eliminate ringing in the < 650 cycle frequencies.
4) Fiberglass inside the cabinet was removed and replaced with wool. Wool is known to provide better bass damping. This resulted in more depth in the bass.
5) Connections to compression drivers were soldered directly, eliminating the JBL connector hardware. The resulting sound from these upgrades is not comparable to the original speaker. There is more authority, musicality and openness. The speakers condition is rated as 7/10, primarily due to the age of the speakers. The cabinets just show normal patina with no visible damage. The drivers and woofers have no issues and are working perfectly. The owner also used a JBL B460 and matching BX-63A crossover with these speakers. They are available separately. Complete information, including driver complement, crossover points, and additional specs can be found on the Lansing Heritage web site. Speaker dimensions are: 55 1/8 inches tall X 36 inches wide X 20 inches deep. Each speaker weighs 320 pounds. They are rated at 100 dB sensitivity and 8 ohm impedance. Obviously, the speakers are best picked up on location. I may arrange for shipping at some point, but will prefer, and will hold out for a local pickup buyer. If shipped, custom crates would need to be made and this will be costly. Freight shipping will also be costly. If it comes to this, all efforts will be made to get the best quotes for safe and economical shipping. Buyer would pay for all crate/shipping/brokerage and customs duties as applicable.
