For sale are Hartley 220 msg full ranges in a very unique custom enclosure. Because of its size and uniqueness a local pick-up and a local listening experience is recommended. The location - the first North suburb of Chicago. I do not think I'm destined to have better sounding speakers in my future. The reason for sale: I'm retired and want to move to a warmer climate/country. You just can't drag them along. They are 48" by 16" by 21" sized which comes to 9.3 cubic feet with outside measurements. Now, while the enclosure is not easily transportable, it's not heavy, but stiff and light due to a special construction. The cabinets are constructed of a sandwich: plywood, styrofoam w/aluminum foil on both sides, plywood again - all amounting to 1 1/8 inch in thickness (See sandwich sample on top of the left speaker). On the inside the sandwich is covered with the asphalt/tar roofing paper, then some 2" of reprocessed jeans cotton insulation (no fiberglass) with absolutely astounding acoustic absorption parameters. Obviously, no crossover. On the outside it's cherry plywood in front, mahogany veneer on the sides - all hand rubbed repeatedly with shellac. It is offered for people who know what Hartley 220 msg is about - arguably the best FR with the sound of Bevereges - look up Chef Henry comments on AA. These are the latest and best 220's made with ceramic magnets to which the Hartleys were switched from alnicos in the 80's. I know this goes against the grain, but this is not my opinion, but of Richard Schmetter, who still makes them, and Yoshi Segoshi of Sakura Systems/47 Labs fame who used the drivers in Hotei speaker ($12,000 a pair in 2005). I believe my cabinet may be better ('believe' is the key word) and definitely bigger (and with Hartleys the bigger is better) and, in comparison, much more affordable. Hotei also employs a tweeter which, perhaps, destroys the FR harmony and demands a some sort of crossover or filter. It's a mystery to me why anybody would need a tweeter with the 220 msg. In the past the Hartley's Co. also made some 2 and 3 way speakers with the 220's in the box due to some commercial, or cynical, if you will, considerations, but the owner himself (according to Chef Henry) just listened to a single 220 in a 'boffle' - a box with hanging felt curtains. Anyway, questions? There should be some questions -:)
