These are the big brother of the famous award winning Celestion 3 and Celestion 5 two way speakers that were a big hit in the mid 1990's. These use the same tweeter and woofer as the Celestion 5 with the addition of a 4.5" midrange giving them better dynamic range and a slightly more forward midrange. This is the quintessential "British sound" with full vocals and lots of detail. I'm generally not a fan of metal dome tweeters but these titanium 1" tweeters are the smoothest I've heard outside of the focal inverted domes. These speakers produce a clean refined sound quality way beyond their price point, and even when sold for around $600 new, competed with speakers considerably above their price point. In addition they're quite efficient and sound full bodied and robust with low powered tube or class D amps (I've used everything from 2A3 tube amps to TPA3116 class D). The speakers have been updated/upgraded as well as follows:

- First, the original crossover used nothing but electrolytic capacitors. At 20 years of age they were starting to dry out. So all the caps were replaced with Film capacitors (Madisound, Audiophiler and Wima metallized polypropylene caps)making them good for many years to come. BTW, the surrounds are doped fiber on the midrange and butyl rubber on the woofers so foam rot is not an issue.

-In addition, the cheap iron core inductors were replaced with air core inductors in the midrange and tweeter crossover sections which opened up the sound considerably.

-Finally, the cheap plastic speaker terminals were replaced with all metal Gold terminals and another pair were added to allow for BI-WIRE or BI-AMPING.

These speakers put out a wide and deep soundstage with both vertical as well as horizontal dispersion and tons of ambient information. They sound MUCH larger than their size would indicate. If you're in a situation with limited space but want that large floor standing sound, these slim monitors will work perfectly.

I'm selling them simply because I have too much gear and am downsizing. They've been sitting unused for some time and I'm following through on my commitment to my fiancé that I would have a one year rule (if I haven't used a piece of gear for a year or more then it's time to let someone else enjoy them ;<) As a side note, the Celestions are sold without the metal stands pictured. They also include the stock grills not shown in the images. Overall the speakers are in nice condition. There's a few light scratches that are noticeable in bright light so they're not perfect. To be conservative I'll rate them at 6/10 in bright light. I would strongly prefer local pickup, or I could meet with them in the Glendale AZ area at Arrowhead lakes on MWF in the afternoon/early evening. I will also consider shipping through Postnet in Anthem Arizona. In that event, I would only be responsible for delivering the unpackaged speakers to Postnet and the remaining shipping activities (packaging etc...) will be handled by Postnet with the buyer managing those remaining shipping arrangements.

Manufacturer Details/Specifications (from their Website):

The Celestion 9 offers a new level of performance in a three-way loudspeaker. Firstly, the standard 1" (25mm) titanium dome tweeter provides a superior performance over non-metal tweeters.

Secondly, a 4½" (110mm) midrange unit incorporating a chamber to absorb rear radiated sound separates the bass and mid-range loading while ensuring a smooth transition between low and high frequencies.

Additionally, the 6" (150mm) bass unit utilising sophisticated Finite Element Analysis gives a clean, dynamic and extended low frequency reproduction.

High power handling capability coupled with low distortion (obtained through reflex type bass loading) tops off the Celestion 9, putting it on the leading edge of performance, technology and style.
