I built a pair of Dynaco A-25's using modern and new SEAS drivers and the same crossover. The cabinets are slightly larger than the original because the woofer is larger. The woofer and tweeter match the characteristics of the original but are much, much better. I used rock wool for the cabinet stuffing, very similar to the original and much better than polyfil stuffing. The cabinets are made from 3/4" MDF and are very inert and heavy. They are professionally clad with VT plastic laminate that looks remarkably like walnut veneer but will last forever. The grilles are covered with acoustical material I purchased from Wendell Fabrics. The binding posts are high quality gold plated cups. I have some felt that surrounds the tweeters that I took off but will reapply. This helps quite a bit; the residue from the felt is what you can see in the photo - it covers with the felt. The grilles fit perfectly with the Velcro attachments I made.
Sonically, they are a marvel and have that unique warm Dyna sound. But, in comparison to the original A-25, which I did with fellow audiophiles, these are way more dynamic with better imaging and much better mid to low bass. There is really no comparison between these and the original. These are also considerably better than the XL versions. The drivers themselves cost $450 so I think the asking price is reasonable considering the cost of the other materials and my time.
Speakers built like this would be selling for $2k and up. A similar modern A-25 a company sold years ago sold for $2500 a pair. You are welcome to come hear them - you will be surprised I am sure. I HAVE LOWERED THE PRICE TRYING TO THIN THE HERD SO I CAN MAKE ROOM FOR MORE PROJECTS!!
