The C55 was the middle of the highly popular and multiple award winning C-series that featured their Uni-Q array drivers. It was larger than the other bookshelf models in the same series by spotting an 8″ passive bass radiator that was coupled just under the similarly sized Uni-Q driver. Bass extension is now down to a more respectable 48Hz but can sound a lot deeper with some clever positioning and use of heavy sturdy stands. But the real star of the show is the speaker's ability to accurately portray musical notes in the more critical mid and highs. Mid-range was a nice warm and full sound that was complemented with a detailed and not overly bright tweeter. Being that it is not ported, they could be placed close to a rear wall and that is where the specialty of the speaker shines. Even at 1 feet away from the rear wall, its ability to throw out a holographic image with some depth was amazing. Most monitor speakers when placed at such distance from the rear wall almost always sounded hollow. But not the Kef C55.
Pushing them out to 3 feet from the rear wall is even better. Imaging is just a tad in front of the speakers now and depth is greatly enhanced with musical placement almost accurate across the width of the sound stage. These are a pair of speakers that amazed many reviewers and users when they were first launched and will still do today. At under $200 for the pair, they are a STEAL! Speaker cabinets have minor blemishes that are common with speakers of this vintage but no major dings or dents. Idon't have the grill covers. Audio trades considered.
