If you are a fan of this site, you know one of the tables I like to work on is the AR-XA. The reason is that when modified you will have a terrific performing, good looking turntable that can compete easily with much more expensive new offerings. This one has 3/8″ solid walnut added to the solid walnut AR plinth adding mass and damping. There are solid oak mounts for the thicker MDF bottom which has three solid ebony feet. The T-bar has been damped and is held in place by easy to adjust wing nuts. There are brand new Sprague caps to keep the on/off popping away. The motor got an “oil bath” and is whisper quiet. The top of the deck has hammered silver paint. The bottom of the metal deck has been painted and damping materials have been added. A larger hole was cut into the metal deck to accomodate the Rega made Clearaudio RB-300 arm. The external wire had a short and was replaced with the famous Cardas 33×4 that is shielded. Clearaudio has applied a damping paint to the arm and it is the best sounding 250 or 300 I have heard. There is an adjustable VTA and the Clearaudio heavy weight and stub for upgraded performance. The arm lift and finger lift both have heat shrink to kill any vibration they might transfer. The spacers on the T-bar are solid mahogany and look beautiful. The whole arm has been cryo treated which makes the wires sound better and the bearings last longer. The center of the platter has been loaded with metal power in model plastic for damping, the outer platter is also damped and painted with black vinyl paint (also a good damper). The original plinth was refinished and the new walnut is a quarter inch lower so you can get a set on- or stock cover if you desire (in other words there is a lip so you can put a cover that was made for the old XA’s right on it).
All together these mods make this a top performing AR-XA, there will not be many out there that can out do this table- I have heard a lot of them and this is up on the top of the heap!Now through the end of the year we are having our annual holiday sale, get a discount off the advertised price on all things turntable (including this one) by using the code "10% off"
