Up For Sale: one Mule Plinth to hold the Technics SP10 mkII.
This plinth is being sold apart from SP10 mkII motor unit for which it is designed. An important design feature of this build is that it is designed specifically for fitting 9-inch tonearms to the SP10 mkII.
To understand the design goal for this plinth, it helps to view the photo of the plinth holding the SP10 mkII chassis and the Graham 2.2 tonearm. This is what I had in mind when I drew the plans in CAD. The tonearm is not for sale, neither is the chassis. The photo is there to help prospective buyers get an idea of what this design is all about.
It features a light/rigid minimalist design. The thinking behind this very light build centers around two ideas; 1) that the SP10 mkII chassis is one of the worlds quietest running turntables built in the 20th century. Therefore, it is not really necessary to build a high-mass plinth to damp drive train noise...of which there isn't hardly any noise at all! 2) the 2nd goal was to design a chassis that looks 'normal' with a 9-inch tonearm mounted to it. For those who plan to use a 9-inch arm with their SP10 mkII, this plinth will compliment the entire vision of it.
The primary material is Baltic Birch Multi-ply. Above each large rubber foot is a cylincrical shot chamber holding #9 lead shot. The shot chambers serve to dampen resonance and also to help 'plant' each footer onto the surface where it stands. This plinth is equipped with 1/4-20 thread inserts to accommodate which ever cone footers the new owner desires. The rubber feet shown will serve as a very practical choice.
Fwiw, I made (and sold) one other Mule Plinth earlier this year. It was my 2nd build and features minor detail changes while retaining the essential design. This one that I have for sale is the first build and adheres to the original design intent.
It is being sold with two tone-arm boards. The one seen mounted is for round base Graham tone-arms such as the 2.2. The board to the side is cut for SME 9 inch tone-arms.
