BACK ON THE MARKET b/c BUYER BACKED OUT. PRICE LOWERED EVEN MORE. Thorens TD 280 Mk IV turntable with Stanton top-of-the-line 881 Mk IIs Moving Magnet cartridge. Rated 9/10 only because of age. Has approximately two hours of use on the table and cartridge, thus new for all practical purposes. Back in late 1997, I ordered the Thorens table (which came loaded with an AT cartridge) and the Stanton 881 cartridge from online sites. Before both arrived, I got wind of a local guy who was selling his souped-up Well Tempered turntable with an AQ Moving Coil cartridge at a price that I couldn’t pass up, and I didn’t. Well, the Thorens tt and Stanton 881 cartridge soon arrived, so I mounted the Stanton cartridge and set out to calibrate the turntable. I soon discovered that the stylus on the cartridge was completely separated, probably because a purchaser didn’t realize that the needle shaft is designed to be off-center, they then fatally tried to center it, and then sent it back to the retailer for reimbursement without bothering to fess up that they broke it. My retailer graciously took the damaged cartridge back and sent me a new one, no questions asked. It soon arrived, and I got everything set up. I listened to a couple of albums, but not needing two turntables, I then boxed up the Thorens and put it in the closet, which is where it’s been for years. My wife and I are in the process of downsizing, hence the reason I am listing it for sale. I can report that the Thorens/Stanton combo is an excellent match. The specs on the cartridge can be found here: http://www.adelcom.net/StantonCart1.htm. I’ve used Stanton 681eee cartridges for over 30 years and loved them. The 881 Mk IIs is even better! I urge you to investigate. I am also including a turntable mat that works quite well in quieting things (http://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/januse.html). It’s worth noting that Audio Advisor now offers a similar Pro-Ject cork mat for $25, which tells me it’s worthwhile. From what I can tell, the TD 280 Mk IV looks essentially the same and has the same specs (<=0.045% wow and flutter; >48dB rumble) as the new model, TD 295 Mk IV, which is available, for example, on Amazon.com for $1199. The only limitation I observed when listening to the TD 280 is that even with its spring loaded frame, like most, the table is sensitive to vibration. Included in the package are the Thorens tt and stock AT cartridge, the cork mat, the mounted Stanton 881 cartridge with accompanying case containing measurements for that cartridge, mounting nuts and bolts, mirror and a screwdriver. Thanks for looking. I’ll be happy to answer your questions and am willing to entertain reasonable offers. Paypal and US shipping fees covered by seller.
