***UPDATE***There have been some corrections to this ad because I was informed that a few of my prior statements were wrong. Specifically, this amp is still in production and my pricing was off a bit as well. My apologies for any confusion ***END OF UPDATE***
I bought these, brand new, in the Fall of 2013 and have run them very regularly in various systems without any issues, and they happen to look quite nice too! The Horn Mono Amplifiers are designed specifically for use with very efficient loudspeakers. They have extremely low noise, low distortion, and approximately 18db less gain than Quicksilver's standard amplifiers. This avoids the noise and gain problems that normally appear when using horn speakers. Say it with me folks: "Yes, Rottenclam, we have wayyyy too much gain in our systems today". The amplifier is designed to sound superb at the extremely low levels (milliwatts) that horn loudspeakers require. Many amplifiers actually have higher distortion at these low levels. These amps are as quiet as the grave, and have provided 7+ years of enjoyable (and almost daily) service. For those audiophiles that wish to experiment with a ‘direct connection’ between their source and amps (thus doing away with a preamp, either active or passive), the low voltage gain of these amps make them perfect for a system configured in such a manner. I have run them on super efficient speakers (HornShoppe), not particularly efficient speakers (Sonus Faber Elipsas), as well as on numerous pairs of QUAD ESLs (always the original ’57’ version). Bulletproof and wonderful sounding each time! There are 8ohm and 4ohm taps, depending on what speakers you prefer running.
As with all Quicksilver amplifiers many different output tubes may be plugged in directly with no adjustments: matched pairs of EL34, KT90, KT88, KT77, KT66, 6550 or 6L6 output tubes. The power supply has over 100 joules of storage and the power cords have an IEC connector if you choose to experiment with different cords. They have an auto-biasing feature, so you dont have to concern yourself with those duties when you change tubes. Quicksilver Horn Mono Amplifier Specifications
