Description below: With the goal of creating a mid range and affordable, yet superior DAC in mind Metrum Acoustics designed the ONYX. It was an unprecedented challenge, which was eventually solved by using an entirely new chip, which has been exclusively developed by Metrum Acoustics and was first used in the PAVANE. The parallel FPGA driven R2R ladder networks as used in the four DAC TWO modules performs on a higher level. These modules splits up the audio samples for each channel into new separate data streams. Each DAC cluster processes a portion of the data in the most linear region of the DAC chips. The result of this process is an extremely high linearity, right down to -145 dB, which gives the ONYX a realistic 24 bit dynamic range. Due to the dual mono design over the entire frequency range an extremely high channel separation of 120 dB is realized. This contributes to the flawless positioning of instruments. In short, the ONYX is a DAC that has taken all the lessons and experiences that Metrum Acoustics has learned over the years, and combined them in an ambitious DAC that can fit in every system. It is musical, honors the Non-oversampling principle while simultaneously incorporating the technological progress that has been made over the years. Data sheet

Metrum Acoustics Onyx, I am not gonna say anything that has not already been said about this gem all I know is I will regret selling this for sure. Most natural, neutral true to life sounding DAC I have heard to this day, I honestly can’t say enough about this DAC. This has the MQA Module installed.
If you are in the market for a R-2R DAC this will not…. I repeat… will NOT disappoint you. This ran circles around so many DACs hard to even call it a comparison.
Box got water damage so I will double box and pack it really well. I have a Raspberry PI 4B 8GB DIY Kit streamer put together, it has the I2s (RJ 45) which is specifically made for Metrum, it also has the HDMI I2s, AES, COAX, BNC and Toslink out. I can always use this streamer but it was specially put together for the Metrum Onyx, if you can switch the USB module to the I2s module this streamer will be amazing. Right now I use AES input. If any one is interested in the streamer I can sell at cost I will not take a loss on this, wait time and assembling trouble is saved for you, it does come with a large linear power supply as well. I would go for this over Amber any day. I am only offering this streamer because it was built specially for the Onyx. You will receive a blank SD card you can program to your liking, I used volumio.
