If a picture is worth 1,000 words, then brace yourself.... because this Luxman pair are just drop-dead sexy in their signature champagne finish. For your consideration is the C-02 preamp which features switching capability for three line-level sources, two tape/disc recorders, and not only MM but also full MC phono gain (including selectable 50/100/300ohm input impedance!) In addition to defeatable NF based tone controls, the C-02 also has an unusual phono direct function that additionally bypasses the tape monitor, filter, balance control and mono switches for the highest possible quality vinyl replay. The companion dual-mono M-02 amplifier offers 140 watts/channel (mono bridgeable to 300 watts), analog peak meters, and a headphone output with independent L/R level controls.
The pictures will also give you a good sense of the robust build, (this was the very last of the original Luxman Duo Beta designs prior to the Alpine acquisition) including THE largest (450VA!) R-core type transformer in the amplifier that I can ever remember seeing in a piece of gear and all but unheard of in 1983 (the preamp also features an R-core), clever heat-pipe design, 4 gang Alps potentiometer, OFC wiring in the MC transformer, etc. I refuse to trot out that tube-like sound cliche, and will only say they exhibit that hallmark rich, dense Lux sound. Nobody will ever accuse them of sounding threadbare, dry or obviously transistory (is that even a word? : ) Cosmetically both are in great shape with some minor imperfections here and there (see detailed pictures). I'd rate the preamp a 7.5/10 with a couple scratches on the top edge and a few light dinks on the far right side of the front panel. The amp is 8/10 with a couple scratches on the top edge around the corners. From even a few feet away they appear perfect (for whatever reason, champagne seems to show that stuff less than either black or silver). Both have just been fully serviced, including replacing all the board-level electrolytics with like value/type, cleaning the controls, adjusting idle bias and d.c. offset to original factory spec, and new green LED lighting for the M-02 meters that looks like a million bucks! Absolutely no regrets here. If you've maybe been considering an integrated in the $1000 range, especially if you're a vinyl enthusiast, this is a no brainer. For the price of an extra pair of interconnects these will make no apology to any integrated I've heard anywhere close, or to many other like priced separates either for that matter. At least for now, only interested in selling them together. I have hard copies of the owners and service manuals for both. I do not have the original boxes.
