These are a coaxial 2 way, using underhung motors for both the woofer and the tweeeter, and a 1st order phase-coherent crossover that Thiel is known for. Underhung motors are INCREDIBLY rare in speakers, as it costs a lot in magnets, almost always uses rare-earth magnets (these Thiel speakers use neodymium for BOTH the woofer AND the tweeter). But the result is that the voice coil is always saturated in the magnetic field, and so they're completely linear at all times (overhung motors are not completely linear/have more distortion).
(Photos are not mine. Speakers are packaged in what I think are the original boxes, as they're absolutely perfectly sized for the speakers.)
Tweeter: 1 inch (2.5 cm) aluminum dome, 5 neodymium magnets, copper pole sleeve, short coil/long gap design, coincidentally mounted with woofer.
Woofer: 6.5 inch (16.5 cm) with anodized aluminum diaphragm, polystyrene reinforcement layer, stabilized by copper pole sleeve, short coil/long gap design, die cast chassis.
