I called this amplifier "Nothin' Fancy" because it does NOT contain exotic stuff. The goal of this project was to rebuild a tired, worn-out Dynaco Stereo 70 into a basic "meat and potatoes" amplifier that will be reliable for years and years. I opted to maintain a "vintage" sound by using NOS Allen-Bradley carbon composition resistors, and non-exotic capacitors. All resistors were matched to within 0.1%. The bias potentiometers were replaced with Spectrol 10-turn potentiometers and the quad capacitor was upgraded to an 80-40-30-20 uF unit. All switches and connectors were replaced with original-style NOS parts. The standard black plastic tube sockets (except for the two "biaset" sockets) were replaced with NOS Cinch "Micanol" sockets for long-term reliability.
The base price of the amplifier is $350.00 (without tubes). Add a NOS Mullard-manufactured GZ34/5AR4, two matched NOS RCA 7199 driver tubes and a factory-matched quad of Electro-Harmonix EL34EH's, and the price goes to $500.00. If you prefer a matched quad of genuine Mullard (Blackburn) EL34's, and the price increases to $800.00.
Please contact me for more information. Shipping is NOT included at these prices. (Sorry).
By the way, if you have a desire for a PAS preamp, another Stereo 70, or an FM-3 tuner, just let me know and I will work on that next.
Sincerely,
Bill Thomas
8/19/2008 Note: This amplifier has been sold. I will have a very similar amplifier available for sale by Wednesday. A third Stereo 70 rebuild should be available by the end of next week.
Coming up soon: How about a REAL PAS-3X preamplifier complete with "improved" green-glas circuit boards, those "special" tone controls and a re-plated cadmium-plated chassis? I am checking my stock of "suitable donors" and NOS parts and *should* have a timetable for construction during the next week.
Stay tuned!
Sincerely,
Bill Thomas
