For sale are a pair of Oris 150 horns built by the famous BD-Design of Norway. The 150 has a lower cutoff frequency of 150hz allowing easy integration to a woofer section. In this case the woofer section is the Avantgarde 225 subwoofers.

There's quite a bit of info online about both the Oris 150 and Avantgarde subs, but to summarize the Oris 150 is a large round horn that uses a single 8" full range driver and the Avantgarde subs have two specially designed 10" paper coned drivers per enclosure with a built in 200 watt power amplifier.

The version of subs included have speaker level inputs only to ensure that the "voicing" of the two sections is identical (sound from the same amplifier is common between both sections). The drivers currently in the 150 horns are virtually new Dayton PS220 drivers with neodymium magnets which work much better than expected. The drivers BD-Design recommends are the AER MK II or MK III which are amazing drivers, but at a entry price beginning around $2,500 they were outside of my price range. But the Daytons really do work exceptionally well in this design. I tried some vintage Richard Allan Alnico drivers and some Audio Nirvana Super 8 Alnicos and they were a class well above either of those units. As an interesting side note, I actually got the Dayton drivers from the famed Vance Dickason who was also impressed with them.

One nice thing about the Daytons is that their efficiency rating is as advertised and Vance tested them at right around 96dbs. In the horns I'm estimating around at least 102dbs (6dbs of gain from the horn loading) of easy loading for those low powered single ended amps. I mainly listened with a 2A3 amp but tried a 45 amp and it drove them to all the volume I would ever need in a larger room (or think anyone would ever need if they're concerned about their hearing ;>)

The Oris horns come from the factory unpainted and these were painted by the original owner in a nissan blue and he had a car painting facility paint them for him. The original owner also built the wood horn stands shown. I stained them black and added rubberized padded material on the contact sides and bottoms for better vibration dampening.

The horns are currently only available for local pickup. I love these speakers, but am planning on moving to Arizona soon and am concerned about them getting damaged during shipping. I thought I would see if there's someone in the Portland/Seattle or possibly Northern California area that may be interested in them and if not will happily pack them to Arizona and take my chances.

I would also consider trades for more compact high efficiency speakers that would ship more easily. Something taller and narrow and at least 95dbs at 8 ohms is what would make the most sense given that I'm hooked on low powered SETs.

I was torn on how to rate their condition and the 6/10 is me being very conservative. The only issues of note are on the subwoofers. The Avantgarde subs are coated in this kind of rubberized paint designed to aid in damping and it rubs off in places when the units are moved about or where the grills are seated and there's a few places where that's happened. It's apparently a common issue with that material but fortunately is limited to those areas and is pretty darn durable otherwise (you can see the one of the areas with the image of just one of the subwoofers with a grill removed).

Also, the fact that the wood stand is a DIY affair and in a certain sense the horns themselves being hand built of a fiberglass resin that from the factory has a slightly uneven surface, I felt a 6/10 rating wouldn't disappoint those used to a factory perfect finish on all surfaces.

The images shown are how the speakers are sitting today and I apologize for the clutter. I'll try to keep the system together in at least a spartan manner for as long as I can so that I can demo the speakers for a seriously interested money or trade in hand party (I hate saying that last part, but I'm going to be really busy packing).
