Many audiophiles think they need higher power amplification. In fact, 150 Watts will drive a speaker with nominal 88 dB sensitivity to 109.8 dB sound pressure levels! A loud rock concert is just a few dB louder, and permanent hearing damage can occur with sustained levels above 90 dB. I have tested, with a calibrated SPL meter, many systems and found that most listening is in the 85-95 dB loudness range. "Only" 150 Watts is going to be overkill for most systems!
It is widely believed that a manufacturer's lower power amplifiers sound better than their higher power models. If true, then this MC152 is the best sounding McIntosh amplifier made today!
