If you already own a Sony Playstation 1 Model SCPH-1001 and want to get the highest quality performance from it, I am offering analog output stage and power supply modifications that will take your Playstation to another level. The modifications include:

1. Modifying the output stage using audio grade Elna Silmic II capacitors, PRP or Dale precision metal film resistors, and Mundorf Teflon-insulated Silver/Gold hook-up wire.

2. Upgrading the capacitors in the power supply with long-life Panasonic electrolytic capacitors and Wima MP3 X2 AC filter capacitors.

3. Adding three (3) 3M Bump-On elastomer feet for raising the height of the player for improved ventillation and heat dissipation. These feet also improve the bass response and isolation from shock and vibration.

These mods work well together to improve the sound. Compared to a stock Model SCPH-1001, the modded player provides:

- Deeper, extended and more detailed bass.

- Extended high frequencies. The sound is no longer rolled off at both frequency extremes as some have claimed with the stock Playstation. There is greater air in the presentation and the recording venue acoustics are better conveyed with improved detail and extension of high frequencies.

- Higher level of detail and transparency while retaining the midrange warmth of the stock unit (this is really evident once the output stage capacitors have had some time to burn-in). Most people who have purchased these modified units from me tell me that it has an "analog" sound quality.

- Larger, more expansive soundstage in all three dimensions.

- Improved imaging. I believe that with greater detail, the space around the performers is better defined.

You can read about other tweaks on the Audiogon discussion thread where I have posted some of my findings. The best way I can describe the result of the mods is that it addresses the weaknesses of the stock unit and retains all the sonic virtues of the stock unit. I was careful not to completely change the sound of the Playstation, because the stock unit is as good as reviewed in Six Moons and Stereophile. Please note that after the modifications, the audio output will only come through the RCA audio jacks, and not through the AV Multi-Out port. The video output from the AV Multi-Out port still operates fine.

Many satisfied customers preferred the modified Playstation 1 to their more expensive CD players:

- Electrocompaniet EMC1 - Arcam CD 73 - Shanling CD-T100SE - Marantz SA8260 - JVC XL-Z1000 - Modified Sony 7700 DVD/CD player - Micromega Stage 3 Transport + PS Audio Ultralink II DAC - Music Hall CD-25 - Raysonic 168 - Modified Sony DVP-NS999ES DVD/CD player

Add a PS Audio or Furutech power cable with a C-7 type two-pole connector, and you'll see why people enjoy this player as a high end CD player at a budget price. For my own personal unit, I've even installed an Isoclean audio grade fuse for further refinement of the sound.

For assurance, you can read my feedback here, view my Audiogon rating under "rhing," and my eBay rating under "richard_hing." Shipping included for U.S. customers. If you live in Canada, shipping is an additional $14 USD.
