Counterpoint SA-2 Pre-Preamplifier: Moving Coil Preamplifier I am selling my SA-2, as I have recently downsized my vinyl rig and I am no longer running low output moving coil cartridges. I bought this new and it has worked superbly. Has provision for adjusting cartridge loading by adding resistors. as well as adding capacitors to adjust bandwidth. Presently the unit has Sovtek 6922s which work well, but may be improved with premium NOS 6DJ8s or 6922s.
The Counterpoint SA-2 is a Pre-Preamplifier (a "head amp") for amplifying the signal of a moving coil cartridge before the signal is connected to the phono input on the preamplifier. The Counterpoint SA-2 uses vacuum tubes and was manufactured in the USA by Counterpoint Electronics from 1982-1991. Counterpoint Electronics was owned by Michael Elliot and his products were hand-crafted in San Diego, California. Counterpoint specialized in vacuum tube electronics for high-end stereo audio systems. High end audio designers in those days (such as PS Audio and Counterpoint) physically separated the power transformer from the audio components with an umbilical to reduce noise in the audio signal path. This is how Michael Elliot described the Counterpoint SA-2: This moving-coil pre-preamplifier was introduced in 1982. It features a fully-tubed signal path and was the first such component to use a vacuum-tube voltage regulator, including a tube rectifier. Important note: this is not a phono stage, and cannot be used in place of one. It is a voltage amplifier designed to raise the low output level of MC cartridges up to MM levels. It is intended to be connected between an MC phono cartridge and the MM input of a phono preamp that does not have a built-in MC stage. Technical Summary:
Pure tube signal path. The unit has two paralleled 6DJ8/6922 triodes per channel for low noise. There is no feedback The transformer is housed in a separate enclosure. The unit offers provisions for adjusting cartridge loading and bandwidth limiting. Front panel controls for On-off, Mute, Tube Bias, with lamps to indicate when the right and left channel tubes have the same bias current. Aluminum front panel finished in black anodize.
