This is a Linn Kairn Preamplifier with Phono stage in very near mint condition. This was Linn’s top of the line stereo preamp, and still easily outperforms most stereo preamps at its original price. The Kairn sold new for $3250.00. Cosmetically it has an excellent case with all panels clean and free from scratches or dings (please see the photos). Only the typical light scratches on the plastic parts from dusting keep it from being mint and those are very slight.
Electronically and sonically the Kairn functions flawlessly and this unit features Linn’s Brilliant Switch-Mode Power Supply, which replaced the transformer in early versions. The Brilliant power supply in this unit was just completely rebuilt by a Linn technician. The Kairn preamp uses microprocessor control and precision resistor ladders to replace normal selectors and Volume and Balance controls. These controls are not subject to the wear and noise of typical potentiometers and therefore function year after year as they did when new. This is a very versatile unit with an exceptional phono stage, which betters all but the most expensive of the separate phono sections out there (such as the Linn Linto which ran $2000.00 all by itself). It has inputs for Moving Coil and Moving Magnet phono cartridges. It will also accept three line level sources (Tuner, CD and Aux) and has inputs and outputs for two Tape Decks. There are three sets of outputs for easy multi-amping. There are also connectors for linking remote control with other Linn products and for using the phono stage in a Linn multi-room system.The versatile Kairn gives you the ability to listen to one source while you record off another. And it has some very useful special functions, my favorite of which is the ability to equalize the volume levels of the various inputs. This way when you switch from Tuner to CD you don’t get blown out of the house as the Kairn automatically adjusts it to the same level when you make the switch. The included remote control can handle all of the preamps’ functions and will also let you control Linn tuners and CD players. The winner of this unit will also receive a printout of the instruction manual, the remote control and the original Linn power cable.
