This massive and powerful Audio Research D160 was used at Watkins Stereo in Kingsport, TN to demonstrate loudspeakers like Watkins WE-1 and W-1ab for almost all of its life. Until January of 2022, when I purchased the D-160 from Bill Watkins Jr.
Cosmetics are excellent as you see in the photos. It’s a showroom piece after all. No scratches, abrasion or damage at all. Really a sight to behold.It is functional, but I’m sure needs some tlc at this point in its life. I’m looking for a buyer who is an experienced audio guy, knowledgeable with electronics. Someone who can set it up properly per ARC instruction manual (included in the sale) and is confident working with 600vdc, as that will be what it takes to set B+, Channel Balance, power tube plate voltage, etc. in this amplifier. I’m too old and it’s too heavy for me to work with…it needs a new, more loving home. At my asking price of 1700.00, the strong testing Amperex 6922 and GE 12bh7 input and driver tubes are included in the sale. I have 6 matching pairs of Phillips EGC 6550 tubes purchased specifically for the amp. The 6 matching pairs all test above 90%Gm for Emissions. Serious tube with seriously solid construction, metal bases and welded plates. The 6 matching pairs are available for an additional $800. All tubes tested above 90%gm for Emissions on my calibrated Sencore MU150.
This D-160 could be fairly easily restored to its former glory and with these tubes it will sound incredible. Serious buyers can message me for more photos of the amp.
