Duntech PCL400 'Black Knights', 3000/obRo

Wonderful speakers from late great designer John Dunlavy, the last pair he designed and manufactured before he began his new company DAL, Dunlavy Audio Labs. His design principles and actual speakers are treasured by music professionals, speaker sets like the Duntech Sovereign and Dunlavy SC-IV still grace any number of recording studios and producer's home.

This final Dunlavy design for Duntech is the model of a purist audiophile speaker, it utilized the highest quality drivers (all Dynaudio) in D'Appolito array with Dunlavy's usual first-order crossovers, in conjunction with a stepped or sloped baffle, creating a time coherence with a rich, full, 20-20Khz sonic expression that is hard to beat, at it's price point then or now. To create this speaker and still get it to the consumer at a reasonable (for audiophiles! lol) price, it is stripped down aesthetically... no lipstick, no gilding, no veneers, everything you need and nothing else; a large grill 'stocking' that encases all but the black lacquered tops and bottoms, just amazing sound. As was pointed out to me by a fellow BK owner before I purchased these: the BKs are amazingly responsive speakers, you can really hear the changes made in components (and dare I day it, cables! -gulp-) you can really build up an in to these speakers as you upgrade your stereo, or the speakers can easily be the final destination pair for a well honed system.

I am the third owner. Shipped to the original owner for home use in North Carolina, then to a nearby record producer/engineer for a number of years, before I picked them up and brought them home to Western Pennsylvania. Unlike many I come across, these Black Knights these are in great running shape, all driver's are original and perfect working condition (in fact, I had two of the woofers rebuilt after I purchased them), still have the 'stockings' intact, and I have both the original manual and some Duntech literature still in the air-mailed-from-Australia envelope to the original owner. For full disclosure, the input jacks/p,lates/cups were replaced by the first owner. I have the originals and you can see why he did so, the 5-way posts and cup itself were not well integrated and it looks like he attempted to glue them back in place a number of times before making a more long term change. The is some lacquer flaking on the 'right' speaker base, that has occurred during my ownership and not 'physically' created but more likely from moving into the full dryness of my home from the humidity of the Carolinas. There are a few hen pecks in the 'stocking' that I can't quite seem to photograph, they aren't large (like grain of rice or smaller) or even noticeable day to day, but a few exist.

Purchaser will pay in cash on pick up. They are about 73" tall and roughly 150+ pounds a piece. The purchaser will need a pickup, mini-van or large SUV, for sure. I would suggest bringing a dolly and perhaps even a friend, I have back issues, and they will need to be taken down 5-6 stairs from my front porch to street level. Just a heads up for those less familiar with BIG-*** speakers.
