This turntable comes from the stock of a radio repair man.
The turntable has been sitting unused for many years.
THIS SALE IS FOR REPAIR OR PARTS.I have tried to give a fair assessment of mechanical function and visual shape of the turntable.
TURNTABLE may need service and adjustment for proper function GARRARD Model RC98/4L four speed 16/33/45/78 rpm changer
The Unit is in VERY GOOD condition, complete, looks great with only some minor visual imperfection, motor and idler run quiet. Lubricants have hardened, the turntable will require a cleaning and relubing.
Currently the Garrard is wired for Mono, but the headshell is prepared for Stereo, and it's straightforward to add another tonearm wire and audio cable THIS WAS ONE OF GARRARDS TOP UNITS prior to the launch of Type A and Lab 80.
No plinth, but has many small goodies often missing: The feeler tip to index arm, the two rubber rings on the pusher platform, a nice and flexible mat, and the original 6 feet power cord and RCA cable. Headshell is set up for 3 wire stereo, Headshell is whole with none of the knockout parts removed. NO CARTRIDGE. Headshell does not have the original distance posts, but 2x 1/2" mounting screws and nuts allow you to mount many cartridges with a washer or a short sleeve. Here's a description by Garrard:
The Garrard RC98 record changer will play automatically any number of records up to eight, of any of the following types at each loading: 10 or 12" at 78rpm, 7, 10 or 12" at 33rpm, 7" at 45rpm. 7" records with large centre hole may be played using the large record spindle type LRS3, available as an optional extra, or with centre hole clip in adaptors, available at record stores. Records may also be played manually. Specifications
Type: automatic record changer Drive: rubber idler wheel Speeds: 16, 33, 45 and 78rpm CONDITION:
Changer has dried out lubrication, the change cycle does not start due to sluggish main cam. Motor runs very quiet, idler wheel is quiet with good torque, only a faint whirring sound at 78 rpm. Visually the unit is in great condition: no scratches or corrosion, all brown bakelite parts in perfect shape, all rubber parts (mat, isolation motor grommets, idler wheel, index lever pointer, pusher rings) are nice and flexible with no hardening or cracking. Behind the pusher assembly there are a few tiny pinprick defects in the cream paint, the brown paint on the tonearm and the index arm have a slight roughness (see last 2 pictures for details). Changer mechanism is complete, there is some tarnishing to plating but no rust or corrosion.
