Built in 2001 by Axiom for a private-label company, these were intended for use in places like college dorm rooms, as an alternative to the typical cheap speakers usually found in such environments. The company's marketing plan never took off, and the 500 pairs that were built wound up as "orphans." Word spread through the audiophile community, and within a few weeks they were grabbed up; do a search of the Speaker Asylum and you can learn all about them.
Anyhow, these babies are really nice little speakers: 15" high, finished in a classy faux rosewood, and amazingly heavy (15 pounds each) for their size. When you pick one up, it feels like you're lifting a concrete block! The M55 is basically a slightly cheaper copy of the famous Axiom M22, with two 4.5" midrange drivers and a titanium tweeter. They put out a very clear, open sound. Their only weakness is in the bass area, with not much going on below 60 Hz.
This pair is in near-new condition, with only one tiny chip (and I mean tiny!) on the bottom rear edge of one speaker. Otherwise they look brand-new. They've been used about an hour a day, running at low levels in a bedroom system. They work well in this application, or they would serve well in an HT system if you paired them with a subwoofer. See pix in my Inmate Systems Photo Gallery if they don't display here.
