This is a listing for an LED peak-responding, two-channel, monitoring device. The mechanical VU meter was originally developed for telephone lines and was built so that the meters "looked good" with spoken voices. Sluggish mechanical meters, whether used on the front panels of power amplifiers, or on the control boards of mixing consoles, simply do not convey enough information. When dealing with music, as opposed to the spoken voice, signal peaks have a way of exceeding amplitude expectations, and when they do they cause amplifiers to go into clipping and recording media to become over recorded. The electronic 510 is an improvement over the mechanical VU meter.

Audio Technology's two-channel, LED peak-responding meter has a 45dB dynamic range with 1dB resolution either side of the 0dB point and a display rise time of 50micro-secs (for 20dB). Sixteen LEDs per channel, calibrated from -39dB to +6dB, are used to display the peak value of complex audio wave forms to an accuracy of plus or minus 0.25dB. The instrument is designed to measure the line level signals or peak output from a power amplifier. A front panel switch selects either option.

In the power mode, the Model 510 indicates the peak output (RMS) of a power amplifier. Rear panel switches are provided to set the 0dB reference to 25, 50, or 100 watts and to select the speaker impedance. The meter sensitivity is: LINE-- 50mv to 5v for 0dB indication; each channel is independently and continuously variable; POWER-- accurate display from 0.003w to 400w; 25, 50, 100 watt 0dB reference selectable; and 4, 8, and 16 ohm impedance selectable. The wattage limits for the three ranges are 100, 200 and 400, respectively.

An internal calibration generator (switch controlled on rear panel) presents a +4dBm signal to the input of the 510 for calibrating the meter in the line level mode to 0VU, the recording industry standard. The right and left channels each have a potentiometer for adjusting signal level. As to input impedance: LINE-- Greater than 10,000 ohms, typically 100,000 ohms for a sensitivity of 0dB=1VRMS input; POWER-- Greater than 20,000 ohms. The display attack time is 750micro-secs (45dB rise) to less than 50micro-secs for 20dB rise. The display decay time is 650ms for 45dB decay to less than 300ms for 20dB decay.

The meter size is: 7.5" wide by 1.75" high by 5.5" deep. The shipping weight is approximately three pounds. I am the original owner of this vintage unit. The meter has never been used and was removed from the carton only to take photographs. The meter comes with an instruction booklet (many illustrations), the original carton and a small LP record featuring calibration signals recorded at 0VU (1kHz and music). The unit will be shipped in double cartons from zip code 95126. Shipping to the 48 states at the buyer's expense. Payment by U.S. Postal Money Order, not PayPal. eBay Feedback: meloroony.
