I've owned this amp for a couple of years now and it has served me well with my back-loaded horns, Altecs and Wharfdales. I'm sorry to see it go but I'm selling off all of my equipment to explore the world of DIY (i.e., amps and speakers). I'm the original owner and the amp is in excellent condition cosmetically and functionally. No issues and basically as I purchased from Don. It's a wonderful cross between 45/2a3 and 300b. I've owned or demo'd 45 (Korneff), 2A3 (Agape/Wright) and 300B (John Hogan) and this is the one that stayed. I think I liked the aesthetics (purple glow of the OD3s). Don't get me wrong, all of the above are excellent amps and choices depending on budget, taste and availability. Amp is quiet and clean sounding. The 807 tubes tend toward the 45 end of the sound spectrum while the 5933s tend more toward the 300b, at least to my ears.

Here are some comments from others at AA, including myself (cut and pasted really without their permission but you can look them up - thought I'd save you some time):

"The 807 single-ended-tetrode/pentode is more-delineated than most 300B SETs I've heard, and has almost the same power capability - about seven watts. This is the single-ended amp for those who prefer transparency of conventional tube or solid-state design. Yet also has a lot of the "you-are-there palpability" that is associated with true DHT designs."

"I think we can take from below that more power might be better a greater percentage of the time. I know my Fostex FE166ES-Rs like more power and sound better with it too. 2A3 wasn't enough so I didn't bother with 45. 300b is just fine and the Art Audio Diavolo and Jota really make them sing. But, if you want 300b power with a 45ish DHT sound (as reported by someone with Don Allen 45 and 807 amps), contact Don Allen and chat with him about his 807 amp. The gentleman I spoke with that turned me on to the 807 amp ranked Don Allen's amps (according to his tastes) in this order: 45, 807, 6W6 PP and cakepan. He didn't care for 300b. I have 300B and 807 and they're both great."

"Nice amp and you are correct the 807 is indirectly heated and its actually a 6L6GC with a top cap and different pin arrangement and yes it does have DHT character."

"Yes, I have Don's full-blown 807 amp with 807s, OD3s and 6BQ7s, and the signature, back-lit lightning bolt. The amp is just wonderful to hear and to observe, especially those OD3s at night. A ccording to Don, he was very impressed with the amp he built for me and decided to build one for himself."

You can look up my feedback at Audiogon as Jim_1. I pack extremely well and the amp and tubes will be in separate boxes.

I'll soon be posting all of my other gear including Don Allen preamp, phonostage / step-up, and CDP; Scott LK-48B and matching 350B tuner (modded by Foster Blair - the gentleman that does the mods for Mapleshade); Intact Audio (Dave Slagle) autoformer based passive preamp; Eastern Electric MiniMax CDP w/ Telefunkens; VPI Scout w/ Dynavector DV-20XL; Sherwood S-5000; back-loaded horns w/ Fostex FE166ES-R drivers; REL Q201E; Quicksilver Mini-Mite Monos, and maybe even my beloved Altecs. Let me know if interested in any of the above.

Jim
