This classic preamp is the brainchild of the legendary Dave Reich who blazed the trail for Classe until he left the company in the early 1990s. This Canadian company's DR5, 6, and 7 preamps are renowned for their reliability, transparency, and somewhat tube-like warmth. The DR5 has a slightly "darker" sound than its successor, the more common DR6. Both are extremely highly regarded solid state preamps, with outstanding MM phono stages. The particular piece being offered in this listing is in perfect condition functionally, and in very good condition cosmetically. The original owner carelessly tried to clean the face plate with a cleaner, and removed much of the original silk screened lettering. I had the face plate professionally re-lettered (not silk screening of course) at considerable cost, and it looks beautifully restored. The piece is very well built and very heavy for a preamp. The unit is very clean. There are a couple of "bright spots" on the edges of the face plate which are only visible close-up, and which could be touched up. The controls move cleanly and silently. The interior is immaculate. It would be hard to find a DR5 in as nice a condition. The rating is a reflection of its age and non-original silk screening on the face plate. The buyer pays actual shipping cost from Toronto, although, for US buyers, I might be able to arrange shipping from Syracuse NY where I visit family. Regional cash pick-up/delivery is possible. Otherwise, payment by Paypal (add 3%).
