The ALTEC 604 HPLN is considered by ALTEC aficionados as one of the best performing of all ALTEC coaxial drivers.This unit combines an 8 ohm woofer and a 16 ohm midrange/tweeter unit. The term HPLN was used to describe "High Power, Less Network". While a standard ALTEC 604E series, etc., will usually spec. a 35 watts continuous rating, this HPLN woofer section is rated at 150 watts. Also, speaker efficiency is a bit higher in the HPLN, and as a result, music's detail retrieval is superior at both low and high volume levels. The 604 HPLN, originally sold without a crossover network, was used in studios as bi-amped. It also can easily be run with a crossover network -- and VERY effectively. To view a schematic for such a crossover, go to Jeff Marquart’s Corner and you’ll find a correct passive crossover design. The 604 HPLN is particularly a superb match for any low-power SE amplifier. It is capable of outstanding performance on all really good amplifiers. Since the woofers can handle more power, this ALTEC coaxial can also be used in smaller enclosures, and still produce excellent bass response and volume. Ships in factory-style boxes.
