Rarely available pair of Quad 12L ACTIVE studio monitors with original factory boxes and foam inserts. Mechanically/acoustically, these are in perfect condition. Cosmetically, the factory piano black finish has a couple of small lines in the veneer (bottom center close-ups), and one of the speakers has a slight ding in the upper right rear corner. Neither of these is visible under normal use, and I mention this more for completeness than anything else.
The Quad 12L Actives are bookshelf reference monitors with onboard and purpose built (expertly matched) active crossover AND biamplification (60W and 40W dual amplifiers in each speaker) that allows this form factor to perform at its very best. For their size, and certainly for their price, I don't believe anything rivals these for speed, accuracy, detail, punch and, of course frequency response, which from 50Hz to 20Khz is as near to flat as I've ever heard. For what it's worth, when the arrival of children and consequent space constraints forced me to abandon my Quad ESL 57s powered by Atma-Sphere M60 OTL monoblocks, the Quad 12L Actives were what I settled on, b/c they did so much of what I prized in the ESL / Atma-Sphere combo, whilst sacrificing very little, and adding an element of macrodynamic punch that the 'stats didn't have. Part of this is due to the basic soundness of the speaker design, but I suspect most of this is down to the built in active crossover and biamplification and the harmony achieved by such a unified/coherent effort.While budget wasn't the primary motivation in switching to the Quad 12L actives, it may be their strongest suit insofar as onboard electronics (including volume controls) allow DIRECT connection of a line level signal via RCAs OR balanced cables. Simply put, you can hookup a CD player via interconnects directly to the Quads and get a world class result without the need for preamplification, amplification, extra interconnects or speaker wire. Lastly, it's worth noting that the Quad 12L Actives are RARE. I don't think Quad produced more than a couple of hundred pairs, and my pet theory as to why is that (in absolute terms and certainly for the price) they so handily outperformed Quads passive 12Ls and external amplifiers, that they threatened to cannibalize sales of the latter.
