For Sale: A perfectly Matched NOS Quad of Philips Double D Getter Holland/Brussels EL34. A magical prince of power tubes.

Here is the data from the tubes, tested on: 1) Hickok TV-10A/U refurbished and calibrated by Roger Kennedy; 2) Eico 666 refurbished and calibrated by the Eico Repair facility in Toronto Canada; just recently calibrated again. 3) Maximatcher, bought new by me and checked with bias probes and DMM just recently for calibration.

All the testers are kept in calibration with reference standard tubes and adjustment when needed. I just completely redid my Eico with calibration procedure. All the components of all the testers were refurbished by pros, using new caps, resistors). I use Amplitrix-tested NOS calibration tubes to keep my data in order. See my feedback.

For Sale: A Matched NOS Quad of Philips Double D Getter Holland/Brussels EL34.

Tube 1-4: Xf4L0D: Xf4L0D: Xf4L0D: Xf4L0D (matched date codes!!) MADE in April 1960

>>>>>Eico % Mutual Dynamic Emission 130% +/- 3% (60 is min and 100 is new spec)

>>>>>Hickok TV-10 Dynamic mutual conductance: 7,000 Gm.+/- 200 (Min is 3800 and NOS is 6,080)

>>>>>Maximatcher at 400V: 38 mA (+/- 1.4) and 6,300GM (+/-200). Coefficient of Variation = 4% Actual values are: 39--39--38--36

Very closely matched, unused, high-NOS values; moreover, three different testers--each of them highly regarded in the type of testing they do--all return the same information: Nice matched quad with:

Dynamic Emission = MATCHED QUAD

Dynamic Mutual Conductance = MATCHED QUAD

Current Draw at 400V = MATCHED QUAD

Gm at 400V = MATCHED QUAD

Values are all well over typical NOS. In fact, given all Silver gettering shows no signs of use. The cathode plates show no sign of burn marks or use. The bases show no discoloration, which would indicate significant use.

This is the most perfect, high testing Holland-DD-EL34 set I have ever tested. ALL FOUR TUBES IN THE QUAD TEST EXACTLY THE SAME. WHY?

1) They are NOS--never used, except by me to run in a few hours and ensure they sounded perfect. because THEY HAVE SAME DATA CODE AND WERE MADE IN MAZDA BRUSSELS PHILIPS PLANT(not FRANCE--A WHOLE OTHER STORY; France plant not the most refined sound in general--but nice though--they did not make any EL34 in France). Sadly, the boxes were in bad shape and I had to toss them. I might have others that are nice boxes--will look.

2) Made in Holland (Belgium, actually) in April 1960. This Philips plant used Holland equipment and manufacturing techniques and materials. I have collected EL34 for 12 years to feed my many EL-34 based amps, including CJ-MV52, CJ-MV-55, Music Reference Rm9-II, Quicksilver M60, and a few amps build by the NJ Maestro Jimmy Nichols of JWN fame.

3) The Mazda plant seems to just 'have tried harder'. I have other tubes from that plant (ECF802, EF86, GZ34) and they all have a 'house sound' that is a lovely compromise between 'solid state' and 'tube lush'. Not too hot and not too cold--just right. So, the folks in the capital of Belgium manufactured like the Germans (the best), such tubes that sounded like the best Hollanders.

Interesting. A good analogy would be GE and Ken-Rad in the States. Me, I always prefer the Ken-Rad, even though GE bought and owned Ken-Rad in the 40's onward. The Mazda signal tubes of same batch all test identical--no matter what the tube type, as do the power tubes. I would say a plant in the US that had the HQ mindset of Mazda Brussels was Tung-Sol. They just made such high quality tubes having superiour construction, longevity and a special house sound (e.g., early 6550, 5U4G, RP-6SN7GT,5881, 6AR6....etc).

EL34 HOLLAND/Brussels BROWN BASE 1957-1963 (sonically close to the METAL BASE 1950's and XF1 Mullard 'Big Base' 1958-1962, these are the 3 best sounding EL34 ever made. No debate). The Holland DD compete very well with the Mullard Big Base EL34. It's a coin toss. For guitar-istos, the MuBigBase is the preference (I think it breaks up earlier and in a ordered way); however, for audiophile tastes, the Holland/Brussles are the King. Truly.

In fact, I like the sound of the 'Xf4-L0' production better than the 'X' Sittard production by a smidgen. Why, it has a warmer midrange, giving up nothing in detail. It just sounds a tad warmer than the 'X' series from Sittard, and it throws more delineated image than Mullard 2X halo. The Brussels tubes are just more musical. The Belgium seems a hybrid sound between Herleen and Sittard. Just lovely. The Mullards 2X-O are just a mite too warm for my taste. Me and whoever has come over has highly preferred the Mazda/Brussels sound. They last a VERY long time (I have been using my personal octet for almost 10 years a around 10 hours a week and they test NOS (and look only a little used in the silver getter, are darkening in the base but the data has gone lower <10% of high NOS).

Actually, these M-Brussels and X-Holland can run down to almost no getter and still test and sound perfect! You know, the USA Tung-Sol 6550 and, surprisingly the early SED 6550 also could go down to no getter and still test high and work well. Great made stuff! The Mullard Xf2 of that era could be seen like 'fine milk chocolate' in sound; these are like 'fine dark chocolate.

End of story: The Philips Mazda (Adzam spelled backwards--Adzam was Philips/Amperex highest consumer line and Mazda was favored by Engineers) Philips Mazda EL34 NOS tubes in my opinion is the KING of EL34, with the QUEEN being the Mid-50s metal base from Holland and the fat-base Mullard the Prince of the type.
